Bahrain's deciding criteria are a correct 10 % NBR VAT return, a credible path to e-invoicing once the NBR sets a date, payroll data fit for the LMRA WPS and SIO, Arabic documents and a visible price. Our shortlist is Wafeq, Zoho Books, TallyPrime, Odoo, SAP Business One and Flowyana. Where none fits, Dictode builds the missing modules in 4โ€“8 weeks.

How we compared ERP systems for Bahrain

Bahrain is a small market with a mature tax office, so the first filter is decisive: can the system produce the box values of an NBR VAT return at 10 % without a spreadsheet and keep three-decimal fils arithmetic straight. The second filter nobody passes yet: the NBR has said e-invoicing is coming but has published no format, platform or date, so we scored vendors on whether they already clear invoices elsewhere in the Gulf and expose an API, not on a Bahrain badge that does not exist.

Then four practical things: payroll data in a shape the LMRA Wage Protection System file and SIO contribution rules can be built from; Arabic documents and a right-to-left workspace; a price printed on the vendor site or an honest quote-based; and reach, meaning a Manama partner, a cloud or on-premise choice and multi-branch support for the retailer with shops in Seef and Riffa.

The shortlist: nine ERP and accounting systems sold in Bahrain

The nine systems below run from the smallest business each suits to the largest, with our own product last so you can judge it against the rest. Every compliance and price line is what the vendor's own site stated when we checked 2026-09-23, not a Dictode test, and prices move. None holds an NBR e-invoicing listing, because Bahrain has published no such register.

Wafeq โ€” Bookkeeping and invoicing in dinars for a small business without a consultant. Its Bahrain edition prices in BHD: Starter BHD 10, Plus BHD 12 and Premium BHD 21 a month on annual billing, an extra branch BHD 7, Enterprise quote-based (wafeq.com/en-bh/pricing, checked 2026-09-23). The site calls it accounting and e-invoicing software, with the e-invoicing aimed at Saudi ZATCA; no NBR claim. Cloud only, Arabic and English.

Zoho Books โ€” The usual pick for a Manama services firm already using Zoho CRM. Its Bahrain edition promises VAT-compliant transactions and consolidated VAT reports ready for filing; the e-invoicing readiness line is written for the UAE, not Bahrain (zoho.com/bh/books, checked 2026-09-23). Prices are in US dollars: a Free plan, then Standard $15, Professional $25 and Premium $35 a month on annual billing. Cloud only, Arabic interface.

Daftra โ€” An Arabic-first cloud suite with accounting, POS, inventory, CRM and HR in one subscription, suited to a small retailer. Plans are Basic $20, Advanced $41.25 and Premium $50 a month, shown as discounts from $30, $55 and $70 (daftra.com/en/plans, checked 2026-09-23). Its site lists e-invoicing for Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan but does not name Bahrain, so prove the 10 % setup on the free trial.

TallyPrime โ€” The desktop ledger most Bahraini accountants already know, sold through Manama partners. Its MENA site lists GCC VAT return filing, bilingual Arabic-English invoices, e-invoicing for Saudi Arabia and a listing as an ASP by the UAE Ministry of Finance, and claims nothing for NBR e-invoicing (tallysolutions.com/mena, checked 2026-09-23). Single-user Silver or multi-user Gold licences, rental or perpetual, from AED 78 on the MENA buy page. Windows, optional cloud access.

ERPNext โ€” Open-source ERP for a company with a technical person in-house. Frappe states it is 100 % open source with no per-user pricing: self-host free, or Frappe Cloud from $5 a month for a shared site and $40 for a dedicated server (frappe.io/cloud/pricing, checked 2026-09-23); implementation is quote-based. Its site says tax compliance is configurable for almost any country but names no Bahrain localisation or NBR feature. Arabic interface; cloud or on-premise.

Odoo โ€” A modular suite that grows from invoicing into inventory, POS and HR without changing vendor. Odoo publishes a One App Free plan, then Standard and Custom plans priced per user per month, on-premise only on Custom; the figure displays in the currency of the country you browse from, so read the BHD or USD amount yourself (odoo.com/pricing, checked 2026-09-23). Arabic is supported; ask for a demo of the Bahrain chart of accounts and 10 % return.

Focus Softnet โ€” A Gulf-wide vendor with its own Manama company, so the implementer can visit. Its Bahrain site markets Focus X as a cloud-hosted, e-invoicing-enabled ERP and states its real-time ERP is fully compliant with VAT in Bahrain; no NBR e-invoicing date is claimed because none exists (focussoftnet.com/bh, checked 2026-09-23). Quote-based. Suits trading, distribution and contracting firms of 20 to 200 staff; check Arabic invoice layouts in the demo.

SAP Business One โ€” The mid-market standard for a Bahraini distributor or manufacturer with 30 to 300 users and a group audit. SAP describes it as an affordable ERP for small and midsize businesses and publishes no list price: the MENA page ends in Request a quote (sap.com/mena, checked 2026-09-23). On-premise or partner-hosted cloud, Arabic among its languages; Bahrain VAT setup and any future NBR connector are partner work.

Flowyana โ€” Dictode's own ERP family, listed last on purpose. It ships accounting with Bahrain at 10 % in its tax catalogue, invoicing with credit notes, inventory with batch and expiry, offline-first POS, CRM, HR with payroll posted to the ledger, multi-branch with per-branch tax registration and Arabicโ€“English documents in an RTL workspace. It does not ship e-invoicing, the LMRA WPS wage file or SIO contribution rules; Dictode builds those per client, typically in 4โ€“8 weeks. Cloud or on-premise; quote-based.

Bahrain compliance checklist for ERP: NBR VAT, e-invoicing, LMRA WPS and SIO

VAT arrived in Bahrain on 1 January 2019 at 5 % and doubled to 10 % on 1 January 2022. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass BHD 37,500 a year and voluntary above BHD 18,750; returns go through the NBR portal monthly or quarterly by turnover. The ERP needs Bahrain tax codes, VAT accounts mapped to the return boxes, reverse charge on imported services and a ledger that rounds in fils, since the dinar has 1,000 subunits.

E-invoicing is the open question: as of September 2026 the NBR has published no format, clearance platform or phased dates, and since 16 November 2023 no prior NBR approval is needed to issue invoices electronically. Buy for that future: a documented API, a stable invoice identifier, structured output beside the PDF, and a vendor that already clears invoices with ZATCA or the UAE model.

Wages pass through the LMRA Wage Protection System under Resolution 68 of 2019 as a monthly wage file, and the enhanced WPS announced in October 2025 moves that to the LMRA portal on a date still to be fixed. SIO contributions for Bahrainis are 18 % employer and 8 % employee in 2026, the employer share reaching 20 % by January 2028; expatriates cost 3 % and 1 % plus the end-of-service contribution that replaced employer-held gratuity from 1 March 2024, at 4.2 % of wage for three years and 8.4 % after. Our GCC payroll compliance guide covers the file and the formulas.

When custom beats off-the-shelf in Bahrain

Three situations recur in Manama. Branch and user pricing, where a retailer with four outlets and forty till staff pays more in seats and add-ons than a one-off build costs. A workflow the package does not model: kitchen tickets and offline tills for a restaurant group, progress claims with retention for a contractor. And integration with what Bahrain actually runs: BenefitPay, bank statement imports, the LMRA WPS portal, the NBR return and Sijilat registration data.

Dictode builds those pieces as custom modules on Flowyana or as integrations with the ERP you already own, typically in 4โ€“8 weeks per module, with the code handed over rather than rented. Off-the-shelf still wins when your books are standard and nobody will maintain custom code; the test is whether the package fits ninety percent of your process.

How to run the selection in 30 days

Week one: write down the process, count invoices, branches, users and employees by nationality, and pull your last two NBR returns and the LMRA wage file so demo data is real. Week two: send one script to four vendors, one per price band, and have each run it live: a 10 % invoice with a credit note, a quarterly return, a multi-branch stock transfer, a payroll month with an SIO split and a bilingual invoice.

Week three: score on the script, then the quote, and ask for a named implementer in Bahrain and a written migration plan. Week four: take references from two Bahraini clients of similar size, negotiate for three years of growth, and set a go-live that lands after a VAT filing, never on top of one. If every package fails the same scenario, price a custom module instead.

Compliance readiness checklist

  • Your NBR VAT number, filing frequency and last two returns, so the demo reproduces real box values at 10 %
  • Monthly counts of invoices, credit notes and receipts, split between VAT-registered customers and consumers
  • Branches, warehouses, tills and the number of staff who need a login, since per-user pricing decides total cost
  • Employees by nationality with CPR numbers, wage components and the current LMRA WPS file layout
  • Which documents must print in Arabic, English or both, and who needs a right-to-left screen
  • Every system the ERP must talk to: BenefitPay, bank statements, e-commerce, POS hardware, and the NBR and LMRA portals

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ERP is best for a small retail or services company in Manama?

A services firm with a few staff is well served by Zoho Books or Wafeq: invoicing, VAT reports and bank matching at a published monthly price. A small retailer with a till and stock should look at Daftra or Flowyana, both with POS included, or TallyPrime if the accountant already keeps books there.

How much does ERP software cost in Bahrain?

Published subscriptions on 2026-09-23 run from BHD 10 a month for Wafeq Starter and $15 for Zoho Books Standard to $50 for Daftra Premium, with ERPNext hosting from $5 a month and TallyPrime from AED 78. Odoo prices per user per month in your local currency. SAP Business One, Focus Softnet and Flowyana are quote-based, and for a mid-size rollout implementation usually costs more than the first year of licences.

Is Zoho Books NBR-ready for Bahrain?

Zoho states on its Bahrain edition that it creates VAT-compliant transactions and consolidated VAT reports for filing, which is what the NBR return needs today. Nobody can be ready for NBR e-invoicing yet, Zoho included, because the NBR has published no format, platform or date; Zoho's readiness statement is written for the UAE mandate.

Is Flowyana the best ERP for Bahrain?

It depends. Flowyana ships accounting with Bahrain VAT at 10 %, invoicing, inventory, an offline-first POS, CRM, HR with payroll posting and Arabicโ€“English documents, and fits when you want one system for shop, warehouse and books or need custom workflows. It does not ship e-invoicing, the LMRA WPS file or SIO rules; Dictode builds those, typically in 4โ€“8 weeks. If a published-price package covers your process, buy that instead.

Cloud or on-premises ERP in Bahrain?

Most businesses under 50 staff should take cloud: no server, backups handled. Choose on-premise or a Bahrain-hosted private cloud when a regulator, bank or group policy requires the books to stay in the country, or when tills must trade through internet outages, where an offline-first POS also helps.

How long does an ERP rollout take in Bahrain?

A cloud accounting package for one company is live in two to four weeks once opening balances are loaded. A multi-branch retailer or distributor on Odoo, Focus X, SAP Business One or Flowyana typically needs eight to sixteen weeks for configuration, migration and training, and a custom module adds about 4โ€“8 weeks in parallel. Cut over in the first week of a VAT period so the first return is a full one.
